Outdoor kitchens are the most project-like work in outdoor living. A single job can involve a masonry or framed island, countertops, a built-in grill, a fridge, a sink with plumbing, gas lines, electrical, lighting, sometimes a pergola, and the pizza oven the customer saw on social media. That's a lot of selections, a lot of trades and a lot of lead times to keep straight.
This guide combines our outdoor kitchen and pizza oven installer guides. Many shops do both: a full kitchen when the budget allows, and a standalone oven when it doesn't.
The job flow, step by step
- Discovery: how they cook, how many people they host, budget range, and existing gas and power.
- Design: layout, island shape, appliance list, materials and finishes.
- Selections and ordering: model numbers, cutouts and lead times, often 2 to 8 weeks for some appliances.
- Trades: gas, electric and plumbing rough-ins by licensed pros where required.
- Build: base or footing, island framing or block, countertops, appliance install.
- Inspections, walkthrough and a "how to care for your kitchen" handoff.

Use a discovery questionnaire before the first visit
Ask ChatGPT for a 12-question outdoor kitchen questionnaire covering how often they cook outside, the number of guests, must-have appliances, fuel available (natural gas, propane or none), power nearby, sun and wind exposure, and budget range. Put it in a Jobber request form or a Google Form. You'll walk into the first meeting knowing whether it's a $6,000 oven-and-counter job or a $60,000 kitchen, and you can bring the right samples.
Selections: the cutout list is everything
A grill that's half an inch too wide for the opening means rebuilding the front of an island. Keep one sheet per job with appliance, brand, model, cutout W x H x D, ventilation requirement, lead time, ordered date and arrival date. Don't frame or pour until every cutout is confirmed against the actual spec sheet. Customers love to "upgrade the grill" mid-project, so make that a signed change order with a note that it may change the island.
Pizza ovens as a product line
Standalone oven installs are faster to sell and easier to schedule. Create three packages in your quote template: oven on an existing patio with a stand, oven on a new block base with a hearth and storage, and oven integrated into an island. Have ChatGPT draft a short explainer on wood vs. gas vs. dual-fuel ovens (heat-up time, flavor, upkeep), and check it against the manufacturers you install. Many customers choose based on that one page.
What to buy by business size
- Oven installs and small islands: Jobber Core, SketchUp Go and ChatGPT free.
- Full kitchens, a few at a time: SketchUp Pro plus JobTread or Housecall Pro with financing.
- Design-build outdoor living company: a construction project tool (JobTread or similar) for kitchens and big jobs, with your field app kept for service calls.
Honest downsides
- No tool will catch a wrong appliance spec for you. The selections sheet only works if someone checks it against the manufacturer's PDF.
- Gas, electrical and plumbing need licensed work and permits in most places. AI-written scopes can make it sound simpler than it is.
- Construction project software is a real monthly cost. Run the numbers against how many kitchens you actually build each year.

FAQ
How do I track appliance selections on outdoor kitchen jobs?
Keep a selections list per job: grill, side burner, fridge, sink, pizza oven, with model numbers, cutout dimensions and lead times. A shared Google Sheet works. Construction tools like JobTread have selections built in. Lock the cutout dimensions before the island is framed, since a wrong grill model is the most expensive mistake in this trade.
Can I install a pizza oven as a standalone job?
Yes, and it is a good entry product. Prefab and kit ovens are a smaller, faster sale than a full kitchen. Quote the base, hearth support, clearances and chimney or flue per the manufacturer’s instructions and local code, and list fuel type (wood, gas or dual).
Is AI any good for outdoor kitchen design?
For brainstorming layouts and explaining options in plain English, yes. For real dimensions, gas line sizing, clearances to combustibles and electrical, no. Those come from manufacturer specs, licensed trades and code.
