Best AI tools for welding and metal fabrication shops (2026)
Updated Oct 17, 2026 · Prices as of Oct 2026 · Some links may be affiliate links (disclosure)
Small shop or mobile welder: run quotes and invoices on Jobber Core at $29 a month on annual billing, and draw parts in Autodesk Fusion. Job shop with 5 to 20 people: move to MRPeasy from $49 per user, or get a Fulcrum quote if you want unlimited users.
Use AI for the paperwork that eats your evenings: quote letters and cut lists from rough sketches.
One job, from call to pickup
- Monday 7:30 a.m.: a contractor sends a photo and sketch of a 42-foot exterior stair railing.
- 8:15: you give the sketch to an AI assistant and ask for a parts list. It returns posts, top and bottom rails, pickets and caps with lengths. You fix the post spacing and add base plates it missed.
- 9:00: material priced from your supplier's current sheet. Labor set at 22 shop hours and 6 install hours. Powder coat subbed out.
- 10:00: quote sent with a 21-day validity line and a 50 percent deposit.
- Wednesday: approved and deposit paid online. The job gets a number and a due date on the shop schedule.
- Next week: cut, fit, weld and grind. The welder clocks time against the job number on a shop tablet.
- Day 9: out to the powder coater. The job shows as "at vendor" so nobody hunts for it.
- Day 14: installed, final invoice sent from the truck, paid by card that evening.

Yearly software bill, small shop to job shop
Mobile welder or two-person shop. Jobber Core is $348 a year. Fusion is about $680. Just over $1,000 a year, which is about the margin on one small railing job.
Eight-person job shop with four people in the office or leading jobs. MRPeasy Professional at $69 for four users is $276 a month, or $3,312 a year. Welders can report time on a shared shop-floor kiosk. Two Fusion seats add about $1,360. Around $4,700 a year.
Twenty people, growing toward $3 million. If ten people need logins, MRPeasy Professional is $690 a month, or $8,280 a year. Fulcrum's reported base tier at $6,000 plus about $5,000 to implement costs more in year one and less after, because users do not add cost. Get both quotes in writing.
Where AI helps in a fab shop
Cut lists and weights. Give it the dimensions and the material and ask for a cut list with total weight. Check the math. It is fast at the arithmetic and sloppy about missing parts.
Quote letters. Paste your line items and ask for a plain quote with scope, exclusions, validity window and payment terms. Exclusions save arguments. "Excludes permits, engineering, concrete and core drilling" belongs on most railing quotes.
Job status replies. When the contractor texts "where are we," a short, clear answer with the next date keeps you on their list.
Not for code work. Procedures, welder qualifications, structural calculations and anything that needs a stamp stay with qualified people and real tests.
Quoting faster without losing margin
Plenty of small fab shops lose money in the quote, not the weld. Labor gets guessed and consumables get forgotten, while steel prices move under you.
- Keep a labor table for common work: hours per foot of railing, per gate, per stair stringer and per trailer repair.
- Add a consumables line, a set percentage of material, so gas and wire are paid for.
- Put outside work, like powder coat or galvanizing, on its own line with your markup.
- After each job, compare actual hours to quoted hours. Adjust the table monthly.
First month on a new system
- Pick a job numbering system and use it on every drawing, quote, time entry and invoice.
- Load material costs and your labor rates into the quoting tool.
- Write quote templates for your three or four most common jobs.
- Get welders clocking time to jobs, on a tablet or kiosk, from day one.
- Track outside vendors as a job status so subbed work stays visible.
- Review job costs every Friday for the first two months.
What I would pick
Mobile repair and residential work: Jobber. Quotes and payments from the truck, and customers can approve on their phone.
Small custom shop drawing its own parts: Jobber plus Fusion. Learn Fusion on a slow week; it pays back on the first plasma table job.
Job shop with repeat customers and outside processing: MRPeasy Professional. Subcontracting and quality control are why you pick that tier.
Shop with many users and real scheduling headaches: Fulcrum. Unlimited users change the math once the office grows.
Where it goes wrong
ERP setups fail when the shop floor does not clock time. If welders skip it, job costing is fiction. Make it part of the job, not paperwork.
Per-user pricing creeps. Count who really needs a login before you buy seats.
AI cut lists miss things: base plates, caps, gussets, extra length for coping. A second look takes five minutes and saves a remake.
Implementation fees and training time are real. Budget a month of lost office hours for any ERP switch.

FAQ
What software should a one or two person welding shop use?
A field service app for quotes and invoices, plus CAD if you draw your own parts. Jobber Core is $29 a month on annual billing and covers quotes and invoicing for gate, railing and repair work. Add Autodesk Fusion, reported at $680 a year, when you need drawings and cut files.
When does a fab shop need an ERP?
When jobs start getting lost between the quote and the shipping dock. A common sign is more than 15 open jobs with parts out at the powder coater, and nobody knows which job is late until the customer calls. MRPeasy starts at $49 per user a month and is the cheapest serious step up.
Can AI quote fabrication work from a drawing?
It can help, not decide. AI can read a drawing or photo, list the parts and draft a cut list and weight estimate. You still check every dimension, choose the material and set the labor hours. Treat its output like a new estimator's first pass.
How should I handle steel price changes in quotes?
Put a short validity window on every quote, often 15 to 30 days, and a line saying material is priced at today's supplier cost. Re-quote large jobs if the customer waits. Software helps by storing your material costs in one place so updating them updates every new quote.
Can ChatGPT write welding procedures?
No, not in any way you should rely on. Welding procedure specifications and welder qualifications follow codes such as AWS D1.1 and need real testing and records. AI can format a document you already have or explain a section in plain words. The procedure itself has to come from qualified testing.
Is Fulcrum worth it over MRPeasy?
For a shop with many users and real production scheduling needs, it can be. Fulcrum is reported to include unlimited users with pricing by revenue, starting around $6,000 a year plus implementation for shops under $3 million. MRPeasy is per user, so it is cheaper with a small office team and grows more expensive as you add seats.
