Best AI tools for towing companies (2026)

Towing runs on a phone that never stops and a dispatcher who keeps six trucks, three motor clubs, a police rotation and an impound lot in their head at once. Every lost call is a lost job. Every missing detail on a motor club invoice is a delayed payment. And every vehicle in the yard is a legal record. Good towing software takes most of that load. AI helps at the edges, mostly by answering the phone and cleaning up the writing.
A night on dispatch
- 6:00 p.m.: shift change. The dispatcher sees five trucks on the map, two already on motor club jobs.
- 6:20: a motor club job comes in through the integration. Lockout, 4 miles from truck 3. Accepted in seconds with an ETA.
- 7:45: police rotation call for an accident on the highway. The dispatcher sends the heavy wrecker. The call record notes the officer and case number.
- 9:10: three calls hit at once. The overflow line goes to an AI answering service that gets location, vehicle, problem and callback number for a cash customer with a flat tire, then texts the details to dispatch.
- 11:30: the accident vehicle reaches the impound lot. The driver takes intake photos of all four sides, the odometer and the interior. Storage clock starts.
- 2:00 a.m.: a private property tow from an apartment lot. The app logs the property authorization and the time the vehicle was hooked.
- 7:30 a.m.: the office manager reviews overnight invoices, sends motor club billing and uses ChatGPT to draft a reply to an angry owner disputing storage fees, then rewrites it in her own voice before sending.

What you will spend
One or two trucks, around 200 calls a month. Towbook Basic at $109 covers it. Add Quo for two lines at $30 and Smith.ai free tier for overflow. About $140 a month. A single extra cash tow at $125 covers most of that.
Six trucks, 600 to 800 calls. Towbook Ultimate+ at $319 gives you room to 1,000 calls. Quo for three dispatch seats, $45. Smith.ai Pro at $150 if overflow is common. Around $515 a month. At this size the bigger money is motor club billing accuracy. If clean invoices save you even 2 percent in rejected or short-paid jobs, that easily beats the software bill.
Fifteen or more trucks with heavy-duty and large police contracts. Towbook Enterprise or an Omadi quote. Compare GPS, impound tools and how each handles your police agencies. Expect $430 and up a month for software alone.
Switching without losing calls
- Pick a slow week. Never switch during winter storms or a holiday weekend.
- Load your rate sheet: hook fees, per-mile rates, winching, after-hours charges, storage by vehicle class, and motor club rates by club.
- Connect each motor club account and test with a real job before you rely on it.
- Enter every vehicle currently in impound with photos, intake date and the ordering authority.
- Install the driver app on every phone and walk each driver through photos, status updates and signatures in the yard.
- Run paper alongside the app for three days, then stop.
Using AI on the phone without getting burned
AI receptionists are fine for "my car will not start in my driveway." They are not fine for "I just hit a deer and I am on the shoulder." Write your script so any mention of an accident, injury, highway, or police sends the call straight to a human dispatcher, or tells the caller to call 911 if anyone is hurt. Test it yourself at 2 a.m. before customers do.
For cash calls, the AI should quote only your posted hook fee and mileage rate, never a total, because the real job often changes at the scene. It should text a link that lets the customer drop a pin, which beats trying to describe a mile marker.
Where AI saves office time
Disputes are constant in towing. An owner who just paid $400 to get their car out of a private property impound is not happy, and they will write a long review. AI can draft a calm reply that explains the authorization and the fee schedule without arguing. You check the facts and post it.
It also helps with driver training material. Ask for a one-page checklist for impound intake photos, or a script for talking to an upset owner at the lot. Short and specific is what drivers will actually read.
Our recommendation for tow shops
Start with Towbook unless you have a specific reason not to. The price is public, it is month to month, and it was built around towing: motor clubs, police rotation and impound lots. Look at Omadi if GPS tracking and private property enforcement are central to your business and you want it all in one system, but get the quote and contract terms in writing. Do not run a towing company on general field service software. It has no idea what a motor club is.
Problems to plan for
Towbook prices by call volume, so a busy winter month can push you into a higher tier or overage. Motor club integrations break when clubs change their systems, and you will have days of manual entry. Drivers resist apps, and a driver who skips intake photos makes the whole impound record weaker. AI answering services cost per call or minute, and a long storm night can burn through a plan fast. And none of this replaces a dispatcher who knows the roads.

FAQ
What is the best towing dispatch software?
Towbook is the one most operators compare everything against. It is month to month, priced by call volume: Basic $109 a month for 250 calls, Professional $209 for 500, Ultimate+ $319 for 1,000 and Enterprise $429 for 1,500. It handles motor club billing, impound and storage lots, and police rotation.
Is Omadi a good alternative to Towbook?
Omadi, now part of Autura, is strong on GPS tracking, private property impounds and police towing. Its pricing is not shown publicly; one October 2026 comparison reported a start of $129 a month on annual prepay for 10 users with add-on modules. Get a written quote and compare it at your real call volume.
Can an AI answer my tow line?
For cash calls it can take the location, vehicle, problem and callback number, and quote your posted hook fee. For accidents, police calls and anyone in danger, it should hand off to a person immediately. Many operators use AI only for overflow and after-hours non-emergency calls.
How do I get paid faster by motor clubs?
Submit clean, complete invoices with GPS times and photos, and submit them the same day. Software that imports motor club jobs and payments cuts the rejections that come from typos and missing data. Track your aging by club so you can see who pays slowly.
How should I track impounded vehicles?
Record every vehicle with photos at intake, the authority or property that ordered the tow, storage start date and daily rate. Your software should calculate fees automatically and alert you when a vehicle hits your state's lien timeline. Mistakes here cause disputes and legal headaches.
